Theatres boast a vast range of different technical systems that come together to create the optimum space for a dramatic performance. As well as having to have an intelligent lighting system, many theatres also invest in a theatre sound system to create the best possible experience for the audience.

If the theatre is a large one, such as one of the large musical theatres in London, the actors or performers will no doubt need to wear small microphones to ensure that they are heard clearly. The theatre stage sound system and sound equipment needs to be installed professionally by people who understand the acoustics of the space in which it is being fitted. This will enable the stage sound to reach everyone in the audience, no matter where they are sitting.

If the space is smaller, it is still important to get a theatre sound system particularly if the performance is a musical one. This will enable individual sounds to be picked out and the sounds won’t “bounce” around the room, but will be amplified comfortably and will be far more enjoyable for the audience. The sounds can be balanced to fill the room proportionately, which is something that the audience wouldn’t normally notice. In this sense, a stage sound system is a subtle piece of technology that shouldn’t draw attention to itself.

It is not only theatres that need sound systems. Any venue that is looking to hold an audience and a speaker or performer should consider getting a professional sound system. This might include schools, community centres, sports centres, pubs, bars, and churches.

Theatre and stage sound systems can be basic, incorporating a simple mic and amp, or more complex, which might involve adding different speakers and control boxes around the theatre. In many of the latter cases, a sound technician might be employed to control the sound element during the performance.
